The mindful and flowing slowness of the long strokes used in Esalen massage can also be integrated into lateral position massage. Supported by pillows and wrapped in towels, massage in the lateral position conveys a sense of security, protection and deep well-being.
Course content
The lateral position offers numerous advantages: it allows access to hard-to-reach muscle groups, relieves pressure on the spine and enables effective techniques for alleviating back pain. The side position is the position of choice and a valuable part of any massage practice, especially for pregnant women or clients with lower back pain.In addition to classic long strokes, we will learn a wide range of techniques – from gentle applications to deeper connective tissue work. This diversity allows us to respond individually to different needs and provide targeted relief.
Another focus of the course is connecting with ourselves and others. Through exercises, dance, continuum and mindful exchange, we open our heart energy and create space for personal development and nourishing encounters.
Course objectives
In this course, participants will learn in a practical way:- The optimal positioning and support in the side position with the help of pillows and aids
- Effective massage techniques for relaxing the neck and shoulder muscles
- Deep massage work on the hip and gluteal muscles to relieve the back
- Massage in the side position for specific client groups such as pregnant women or pain patients
- Precautions and contraindications in pregnancy massage
- Ergonomic posture on the massage table to support working with ease and your own body weight

Esalen massage practitioner or in training, massage therapist.Note

Course Instructor
Ingrid MAY
As a native German physiotherapist she worked for 6 years at a school for physically handicapped children. Since 1981 she lived, learned and taught in Big Sur at the Esalen® Institute and is part of the Esalen Healing Arts Faculty. Ingrid is the founder and co-director of the Oasis School for the Healing Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and is based in Ulm, Germany. She conducts seminars and workshops around the world and combines her knowledge with her love for the heart.
Lili IMBODEN
Esalen® Massage Teacher (introductory courses and co-teacher training) and Craniosacral Therapist with own practice in Herzogenbuchsee. She is a yoga teacher (Medical Yoga and Spiral Dynamics), pharmacist and herbalist. She considers mindful touch, movement, singing and dance as a gift of life to connect with herself and other people. She coordinates the Esalen Massage Switzerland network.
