Course Content

Tango Zen offers a unique approach that combines meditation with the art of dancing. This method seamlessly integrates the passion of tango with Zen mindfulness, and draws upon the timeless practices of tai chi, qigong, and chakra exercises. In this workshop, you'll learn to connect deeply with your own energy and enhance your tango experience. By releasing self-consciousness and fully immersing yourself in the music, movement, and connection with your partner, you'll allow resonating energies to flow through your body and mind. Throughout the weekend, you'll develop a profound connection with your partner and navigate the dance floor with grace and fluidity. You’ll leave with a solid foundation in Tango Zen, ready to harmonize your body, mind, and spirit, and dance in a way that is authentic, expressive, and emotionally resonant.

Course Elements

Tango

Mindful Tango: Integrating Body and Rhythm

As a key element of the workshop, we blend the principles of mindfulness with tango to create a holistic dance experience. This component emphasizes the importance of breath, posture, and intuitive connection, integrating Zen meditation practices to refine your movements. Participants will immerse themselves in a mindful approach that harmonizes mind, body, and rhythm, achieving a profound sense of unity with their dance partner, the music, and themselves, transcending traditional dance steps for a Zen-like state of flow and harmony.

Two Bodies, One Heart

We explore the essence of Tango through the lens of mindfulness and movement. Engage in exercises that enhance body awareness, fostering a deeper, intuitive connection with your dance partner and the music. Through practices such as qi gong and pendulum, followed by Infinity Chakra exercises, you’ll learn to center, balance, and adapt your movements to various rhythms. These activities are designed to cultivate a profound energy exchange, harmonizing your mind and body and enhancing your overall dance experience. Discover the rhythmic unity and resonance in dance, connecting with fellow participants and achieving a harmonious flow in every step.

The Art of Pause and Stillness

We delve into the art of embracing stillness within the motion of Tango, exploring the significance of pauses and how mindful breathing can transform your dance experience. Through focused mindfulness exercises, you'll discover joy and connection in these pauses, adding depth to your Tango journey. Additionally, we'll refine your dance by emphasizing clear, intentional communication through subtle movements, enhancing the joy and essence of each step and enriching the overall connection between partners.

Dancing Tango with Eyes Closed

Unleash your inner senses in Tango by exploring the dance with your eyes closed. This class invites you to uncover new perspectives and connect with the dance through inner "eyes". By focusing on minimalism and the concept of doing less, you’ll refine your movements to highlight the essence of the dance. Through meditation techniques, you'll enhance your ability to fully experience and enjoy the dance, embracing a more profound connection with your partner and the music. This approach brings a new depth to your Tango experience, allowing you to savor the joy and subtlety of each movement.

Chan PARK

is an engineer, meditation coach, and tango dance instructor with a diverse background spanning science and engineering, patent law, and renewable energy, brings a unique perspective to the dance floor. With nineteen years of engineering experience at NASA and a deep exploration of tango, Chan has redefined his understanding of the dance. Since embarking on his tango journey in 1997, Chan experienced a profound moment reminiscent of Zen while dancing with a partner, prompting him to blend his passions into a new approach: Tango Zen. His exploration led him to spend four years from 2008 to 2012 immersed in Buenos Aires’ tango culture, where he aligned his concept of tango with its traditional essence—emphasizing the embrace, music, rhythm, and the profound connection between partners. Chan authored
Tango Zen: Walking Dance Meditation in 2005, a book that has been translated into five languages and shared through workshops in 25 countries. His documentary, Tango Your Life, released in 2012, explores tango as a cultural phenomenon, showcasing his journey through Buenos Aires. Chan now offers Tango Zen workshops regularly in Buenos Aires, where he blends mindfulness with tango to create a dance experience that is both genuine and emotionally resonant. Having conducted the workshop in 24 countries across Europe, the USA, and Asia, Chan is thrilled to bring this unique approach to tango to the very heart of the dance. Additionally, he is working on a new book and film that will further explore the themes of tango and mindfulness, continuing to enrich individuals and the global tango community with his insights.
