A four-day introductory workshop as part of the international Esalen Massage Gathering in Kiental.
This four-day workshop introduces you to the essence of Esalen Massage—the art of listening through touch.
Guided by experienced members of the Esalen Massage Global Village Teaching Team, you will explore how presence, rhythm, and mindful movement support balance, lightness, and renewal in the body.
Each day begins with centering practices such as free movement, mindful yoga, or Tai Chi. These somatic explorations awaken the senses and promote grounding—the foundation for clear, caring giving and receiving of touch.
At the table, we focus our attention on body mechanics, grounding, and flow. Step by step, you will learn the fundamental techniques of Esalen Massage: the long, connecting strokes in the prone and supine positions.
In addition, we deepen our work with nuanced touch and supportive techniques. These refine perception and expand the natural intelligence of the hands. Through guided practice and feedback, the teaching team will guide you in developing trust, presence, and a harmonious flow.
This workshop is designed for beginners as well as massage therapists who wish to return to the simplicity and presence of mindful touch.
It is also valuable preparation for anyone considering future Esalen Massage training. It can be credited as Module 1 of the Esalen Massage training at Kientalerhof.

Mac MURPHY
is a practitioner of human transformation, massage, bodywork, and embodiment practices. He grew up in Mill Valley, north of San Francisco, amidst the redwood-covered hills and beaches surrounding Mt. Tamalpais. There, he fell in love with the magic of nature. Mac is a fourth-generation steward of the land at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. Esalen is a place of unspoiled natural beauty, an ancient site with a profound human history dating back 10,000 years to when the Esselen people arrived there at the end of the last ice age. The powerful energy of the land lives within him.
Lance WEIHMULLER
For Lance Weihmuller, the journey to Esalen massage began in Asheville, North Carolina—during a time of new beginnings following the pandemic. There, he met teachers from the Esalen tradition whose way of touching and teaching immediately resonated with something familiar within him. “I dove right in. I’ll never forget what it felt like to massage with my whole heart. ” Today, Lance lives and works in Austin, Texas. The transitions in his work are particularly important to him—the quiet moments between movements, in which connection, attention, and presence arise. He describes his training in Esalen massage as the feeling of having found people who share the same questions about touch, the body, and what it means to be human.
